Valve update rules for holding Majors – replace RMR system and increase number of participants
Counter-Strike 2 developers have updated the rules for holding Majors – starting from 2025, tournaments will take place with the participation of 32 teams instead of 24. An additional stage was added to the event structure, which will play out in a Swiss format. This means that the total duration of the competition will increase by approximately four days.
Moreover, Valve revised the distribution of slots and announced new qualifiers to replace RMR – Major Regional Qualifiers (MRQ). They will feature 16 squads in Americas and Europe, as well as eight rosters in Asia. At the same time, the developers allowed MRQ to be held online. The six strongest teams from the Americas and Europe MRQ will advance to the first stage of the Major; the Asian region was allocated four slots.
Based on the results of the first stage of the Major, the top eight squads will qualify for the second stage, where they will be joined by eight invitees. One invite will be allocated to a region for each team from that region that reached the third stage of the previous Major (top 16). The same applies to the third stage, to which one invite will be assigned to a region for each team that reached the playoffs of the previous Major (top 8).
Thus, taking into account the results of Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024, eight European squads, one American and one Asian roster will receive invites to the third stage of BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025 – the first Counter-Strike 2 Major in 2025, where the new system will be tested.
