The Buchholz system will be used for PGL Major Stockholm 2021 seeding

PGL has announced some changes in the format of the upcoming Major, which starts next week in Stockholm. These changes affected the seeding system in all three stages of the championship.

For the draw, the PGL Major Stockholm 2021 organizers will use the Buchholz system, which replaces the Elo method used in previous Majors. The system will be applied from the 3rd round of the Challengers Stage and Legends Stage, the format of which implies the Swiss system, as well as in the initial seeding of the Champions Stage (playoffs) in order to distribute the participants with the same result at the end of the group stage.

The Buchholz system is used to assess the difficulty of the team's path in the previous rounds of the competition. It is determined by counting the victories and defeats of each of the participants' opponents.

The PGL's press release provides the following example of the seeding using the Buchholz system:

1) Your team has a 0-2 record (two losses) and your prior opponents are 2-0 and 1-1. Your tiebreaker score is 2 (your prior opponents have 3 wins total, and 1 loss total, so 3-1 = 2).
2) Another team is 0-2 (two losses), and their prior opponents are both 1-1. Their tiebreaker score is 0 (the prior opponents have 2 wins and 2 losses in total, so 2-2 = 0).
3) This means your team has the higher seed with a Buchholz score of 2 vs 0 due to stronger opponents.

If the Buchholz score turns out to be identical for two teams, the starting seeding of the current stage is used.

PGL Major Stockholm 2021 will take place from October 26 to November 7. Detailed information on the prestigious championship can be found on the "Tournaments" page via this link.
