Astralis could lose chance to play at IEM Katowice 2023 due to changes in ESL World Ranking

Danish team Astralis are at risk of losing a ticket to IEM Katowice 2023, which they preliminarily secured through tournament operator ESL's World Ranking, Dust2.us Editor-in-Chief, Ryan Friend, has reported.

It turned out that ESL changed the number of points for regional tournaments that had already taken place, which had previously been mistakenly classified as global. This led to Astralis losing their leading position, with Evil Geniuses and paiN getting ahead.

At the moment, the slots are in the hands of EG and Astralis with 235 and 222 points, respectively, however, paiN, with 217 points, still have a chance to even come out on top in this trio's race.

The disputable situation in the ESL World Ranking forced all three aforementioned teams to take part in online tournaments intended mainly for tier-3 teams and below. Evil Geniuses and paiN unexpectedly showed up at ESEA's amateur Cash Cup competitions, which will bring them extra points, while the Danish giant accepted an invitation to CCT Central Europe Series 4.

IEM Katowice 2023 will take place in early February, shortly after the end of the winter off-season. The participants' list currently includes FaZe, Vitality, Outsiders, fnatic and Permitta.
