PGL to fine teams that withdraw from tournaments

PGL has added a new clause to its 2027 tournament rulebook that punishes teams for pulling out of events. The tournament operator has introduced large financial penalties for teams that withdraw from a tournament after confirming their participation. The new rule reads:

Any Roster that withdraws from a PGL event, regardless of the timing of the withdrawal or the surrounding circumstances, is disqualified from receiving a Direct VRS Invite to the PGL event for which invitations are to be sent next.

The Organisation of a Team that withdraws from the Main Event must also:

  • Reimburse PGL in full for any arrangements already made for the Team, such as flights and accommodation;
  • Cover the costs of the Team that replaces it; and
  • Pay a fixed withdrawal fine of $30,000.

The reimbursement and fine do not apply to a withdrawal caused by a documented medical emergency, or by a visa refusal for reasons outside the Team's control (for example, not because of a late or incomplete application), supported by official documentation.

Teams that withdraw from a PGL tournament were already barred from receiving a direct invite to the next PGL event under previous versions of the rulebook, but this is the first time financial sanctions have been included. The new rule will only take effect from PGL's fifth tournament of 2027, which is scheduled to run from September 4 to 12.
