FURIA founder criticizes current RMR tournament format [Updated]

Update (12:40 MSK): PGL has changed the rules of the American RMR tournament by adding best-of-three matches to exclude two teams from finishing the event with a 3-2 result. The bottom seeded teams will play one match, the winner of which will have another game against the top seeded team. All three meetings will be held on April 15.

The founder and one of the current heads of FURIA, Jaime Padua, took to his Twitter to draw attention to the problem of the current RMR format. In particular, he criticized the lack of decider matches, due to which the teams that showed the same result will be randomly distributed to different stages of PGL Major Antwerp 2022.

The Brazilian's comments refer to the Buchholz system, which will determine the seeding of teams in the tournament and the distribution of final places. Padua believes that such a system gives an advantage to the teams with an initially lower seeding, as it implies more benifits for victories over stronger opponents.

Due to the Bulchoz rule, RMR won't have a decider match to define which team (3-0) will get the legend spot (only 1 slot for Americas). Also, two 3-2 teams will not make it through the Major based on the teams they played against before. We should raise attention on this.

If we look to European RMR A, one 3-1 team will get the legend spot, while the other two will get the challenger spot. On European RMR B, one 3-1 team (from 3) will get the legend spot, and one 3-2 team (from 3) will get eliminated.

The Bulcholz rule offers more points for teams that beat better competitors. I know that it's part of the rule, but a team with a higher seed has a disadvantage in this scenario cause they don't have the option to choose their opponents.

PGL said they don't want to touch on this. But this could harm the fairness of the tournament. Therefore, I am asking for a decider Best-of-three between both 3-0 teams, 3-1 teams, 3-2 teams if necessary. This way, we will have the fairest possible outcome in any scenario.

The FURIA representative added that prior to commenting on the problem, he, along with other team leaders, tried to solve it outside the public field. NIP's CEO Hicham Chahine and Complexity's CS:GO division Manager Graham Pitt supported the comments on the RMR tournament regulations.

The qualifying tournaments for the upcoming Major will take place from April 11 to 20 in Bucharest. 24 tickets to the prestigious event will be contested among 52 teams divided into three regions: European, American and Asia-Pacific. All the events will be held according to the Swiss system using the mentioned Buchholz rule.
