ESL: in case of illness of two or more players, the team is to be withdrawn from IEM Rio Major 2022

ESL has published the replacement rules for IEM Rio Major 2022 on its official website. The organizer of the upcoming Major drew attention to the fact that if two or more members of any roster cannot play a match due to illness, the team will be unable to participate in the tournament.

According to the Major's rules, all teams are obliged to go to Brazil with a registered substitute player or coach. If any of the esports players get sick, they will not be allowed to play out of isolation, and if the sickness spreads to two or more people, the team will be disqualified.

ESL made such decision taking into account that all three stages of the Major will be held on stage in front of a live audience, which does not allow the player in a hotel room to be on an equal footing with the rest of the participants.

We understand that this ruling effectively means that if any sickness takes hold and a team is unable to field a full roster, that team would not be able to continue within the tournament. After looking at the matter from all perspectives, the conclusion was that the audio, audience, and entire setup in CS:GO is different with an advantage to a backstage environment, and therefore could not be allowed in the interest of the integrity of the competition.

IEM Rio Major 2022 will take place from October 31 to November 13 in Rio de Janeiro. 24 participants will be competing for a total prize pool of $1.25 million.
